I've never used a Shelter unit, but they are very hard to 'defend'. The best weapons you can you with them are Milkors and Grenades. That's really all the advice I can give, because I never used them. They are great for offense and defense, btw.

Idk, use them as decoys or as your forward-i-know-ill-get-some-damage-guy. Since it can take alot of punishment (especially with a doc on the team) i bet you can do lots of risky moves that otherwise would end up in defeat.
But hey, im not a vet or anything. ask veterans when they are online, they usually are very helpful.

Shelter units a good option at megas but mainly for your team not for yourself.
You can push with a shelterunit turn by turn. Its's important to give the shelterunit many remain ap. So just use 2-3 ap for moving, stay and wait for opponent attack with very low damage. Or go in sight and give vision for your team to kill an opponent. But notice if you just use your turns with healing your shelter and move him 2-3 steps to the enemy you are very helpfull for your team but you just earn less exp because you primary waste your ap for healing and the sheltereffect not for giving damage.
At 1vs1 a shelterunit isn't so important because your opponent will ignore this unit (useless to attack) and you also can't attack with this unit. If you attack with your own shelter-unit and you have less remain ap so your shelter is nearly a normal unit again.
Later its important to give some other resistence to the shelter too. This depends on opponent-level and what kind of nades he can use.
- If somebody blind your shelter you can't use them for giving vision or you must move with more ap (this means less shelter-effect).
- If somebody stun your shelter you also lose the remain ap, this also means no shelter-effect and the unit is earns normal damage again.
- Shelter with many remain ap is a very good poisen target because the poisen effect is raised. Maybe you use poisen resistence the drop this effect.
